No matter where you stand on the end of the HBO series or the perpetually incomplete state of George RR Martin’s novels, you can’t deny that the world of Westeros was a compelling fantasy world rife with thrilling storylines and iconic characters.
The Song of Fire and Ice is no stranger to the gaming world, with some coming out as early as 2011, And whether you game solely on your mobile device, a console, a PC rig, or even just love pulling the arms of a slot machine in a Las Vegas casino, Game of Thrones has taken on countless forms in the world of gaming.
But for a brand like Game of Thrones, it can’t simply be a point and shoot FPS game. Game of Thrones is all about storytelling and strategy. That’s why at Gamescom 2026 in Cologne, Germany, Australian studio Playside revealed their first official gameplay trailer for the highly anticipated real time strategy game Game of Thrones: War for Westeros.
What makes this interesting is the fact that you as the player don’t seem to be relegated to a side mission on the edge of the main battle, forming your own parallel storyline. You appear to take control of major players in the Stark family, the Lannister family, and countless others, with major characters depicted with the faces of the actors from the HBO series. How you move the story forward in this RTS, whether within the confines of the established canon or giving you the opportunity to branch off into making a season 8 of your own, remains to be seen. I personally am looking forward to finding out first hand, as I enjoy RTS games more than any other style of PC gaming.
Watch for Game of Thrones: War for Westeros to become available sometime in 2027.
