For most watching this trailer, you would have walked inside an arcade somewhere around 1989 to have a clue as to what this new animated series is even referring to.
While popular in the waning years of the arcade era and in more than a few red hued and checkered Pizza Huts just inside the door, Golden Axe didn’t make waves on the level of Pac-Man or Donkey Kong, but it certain had its hardcore fans. Slashing its way onto Paramount+ on September 16th, this new animated series gives fans old and new a trip back to the world we’ve only ever known prior to this in the style of seemingly endless side-scrolling action. Hint: it does end. And if this season or series finale doesn’t have a credits sequence similar to the game, someone’s going to be VERY disappointed.

In an homage to SEGA’s iconic 1989 video game, Golden Axe follows legendary warriors Ax Battler, Tyris Flare and Gilius Thunderhead as they reunite to save Yuria from the evil giant Death Adder, who just won’t seem to stay dead. Their quest is complicated by Hampton Squib, an inexperienced and wildly underprepared adventurer whose dream of heroism far exceeds his abilities. Forced to work together despite their flaws, they must find a way to stop Death Adder once and for all.
