From the man who brought you everything from The Incredibles to The Iron Giant, Brad Bird sets Ray Gunn in a technicolor noir early 20th century metropolis, fills it with flying cars and a femme fatale, and centers it around an inevitable murder mystery. And I’m pretty sure he made Tom Waits into an alien.
From just a glimpse of this trailer, writer and director Brad Bird has created a compelling story balanced somewhere between the action of Mission Impossible and the comedy of the Simpsons, draped in the unmistakable retro compositions of Michael Giacchino. Plus, he’s pulled in Sam Rockwell and Scarlet Johansson and a host of other familiar voices into this new Netflix animated film.
A passion project 30 years in the making, Ray Gunn might be the perfect blend of nostalgia-driven classic era filmmaking made only possible by the future of 3D animated storytelling. Most of all, it looks fun. Here’s the trailer to prove me right:
Ray Gunn will have a limited theatrical release in the US starting December 4th and then become available on Netflix on December 18th.
